Hans and Margaret did.
In the mid 1930’s Hans and Margaret were living in the city of love, Paris. Hans was a salesman and Margaret worked in advertising. One day, after seeing some of Hans’ animal sketches a publisher commissioned the couple to write a children’s book eventually called “Cecily G and the Nine Monkeys”. It was so successful that Hans and Margaret decided to write their next story about one of the standout characters. A simple story about love, learning and trying new things.
And they had just finished it when World War II abruptly changed absolutely everything. Hans and Margaret fled for their lives on a pair of old bicycles they assembled themselves all the while clutching what mattered most to them in this world … including their completed manuscript.
Thankfully Hans and Margaret safely escaped and made their way to New York City where a publisher took a their chance on them and their story.
Today, over 80 years later, the character and book series Hans and Margaret created and escaped wartime France with remains one of most universally loved of all time. Curious? Curious George.
