Mike did.
Mike was an IT guy. And made a good living in 1995 helping people understand this new thing called the Internet. One day Mike was talking over the Internet to a friend thousands of miles away … and was so impressed with the clarity he thought someday everyone would be phoning each other that way. And thats when fate rang Mike up with a great idea … an idea for a domain name … but the one he really wanted was taken. So he tried a shorter version of the name which was available so he bought it .. his wife thought he was crazy. Mike posted a really simple webpage promoting his business and dutifully paid the $30 domain fees every year … and got few hits from time to time. Fast forward 12 years to one day in mid 2007 when everything changed. His site was swamped by a flood of traffic that just wouldn’t stop. It turned out a major global company had just launched a whole new product line with a multimillion marketing campaign … and before they launched they hadn’t thought of securing the .com name .. the name Mike had owned for 12 years. Well, rather than fight the company, Mike sold the domain to them … for over $1 million.
Today, that domain that Mike registered on a lark 12 years before Apple created and launched its revoluntiony product has helped them sell over a billion of them worldwide … iPhone.com
