Janet did.

It’s not really classified information but Janet grew up in Brampton, just north of Toronto … At 14, while her schoolmates were reading romance novels she was reading business biographies … she like business so much that she started he own muffin making business that summer and made a $2,400 profit … Janet was a natural at spotting opportunities.

Fast forward, 15 years and Janet ended up in California … talking her way into a top job at eBay. It was fun and crazy successful but kind of lonely. She missed her family and friends … so Janet took a demotion to run eBay in Canada. Her colleagues thought she was crazy. But Janet was much happier.

Once back, she saw a challenge .. eBay in Canada was just as successful as in other countries … but people seemed to abandon shopping carts a lot more than elsewhere … and that when she had a great idea … Rather than try to get Canadians to use eBay, why not adapt eBay to Canadian preferences? She pitched the idea to head office in California. It was a stretch but given Janet’s high level experience there they couldn’t say no. and that was that.

Today, the website Janet Bannister and eBay launched in Canada in 2005, is now one of the most successful Canadian Internet brands there is …with 16 million unique visitors every single month … and its name means village in Swahili. Kijiji
