Joe did.

Joe’s life was anything but super. His family was poor and, at age 9, he worked as a newspaper boy for the Toronto Daily Star. Joe loved to draw but paper was expensivee so Joe scrounged whatever paper he could find on the streets like old unused rolls of wallpaper.

Fast forward many years and Joe and his friend Jerry submitted their comic book ideas to a publisher … the publisher liked the work but told them to resubmit it as Joe was still using the wallpaper he’d found on that Toronto street.

It was about then the Joe and Jerry had an idea for a new character .. but it took 6 years before someone finally published the new comic … with main characters named after big movie stars of the day and featured setting named after the Toronto Daily Star newspaper where Joe worked as a boy all be it with a slight astronomical adjustment when the comic strip received international distribution

Today, over 80 years later, the iconic character Joe and Jerry created is known worldwide … but he might never have flown if budding 9 year old artist Joe hadn’t picked up a disused roll of wallpaper on a street in Toronto … Superman

Superman is a great idea .. because drawing on what you love can often turn out super, man!
