Jacob did.
Jacob grew up in Elmira, New York .. and had designs on eventually leaving town … at 18, after spending a summer in Cape Cod working in a clothing store, Jacob returned to Elmira and used his entire life savings of $150 to open his own store with friends … it had clothes, a hair salon, a record shop and they staged rock concerts in the basement .. to stock the store Jacob would regularly travel to New York City to buy clothes from suppliers … but he wasn’t happy with the designs he was seeing … so he fashioned his own clothes and … realized that he absolutely loved it … pretty soon Jacob and his friends had 10 stores and life was good until it wasn’t … just 7 years after starting out the stores went bankrupt .. it was a crushing blow but Jacob learned an awful lot about business from that failure … and then moved to New York City .. where he took on all types of freelance clothing design jobs but it was tough work and Jacob needed for more stability with his first child was on the way … so he accepted a design position with Calvin Klein .. when go figure, out of the blue, an Indian businessman who liked Jacob’s designs offered to fund a complete men’s sportswear line … if Jacob would run it … so Jacob never started work at Calvin Klein … and the rest is history
Today, over 30 years later, the company Jacob started with the initial support of an Indian businessman after the failure of his own original stores … now has $7 billion in sales annually .. and is still named after Jacob … Thomas Jacob Hillfiger
Tommy Hillfiger is a great idea because the failure isn’t the end .. its just the beginning if you can learn from it
