Mike did.

Mike grew up in California and loved music. At 6 he asked his parents for piano lessons .. by 15 he was playing gigs in clubs. A solo career fizzled so he ended up doing session work and soon was in demand. At 24, Mike landed a dream job as the musical director for the Andy Williams TV show. But he did such a poor job on his very first show that Andy’s guest, Ray Charles, chewed him out in front of the studio audience.

One day, while thinking about what to do next Mike and his family went to the beach … it was very crowded so Mike moved some unattended towels to lay out his own … well the owner of other towels appeared and the two men almost got into a fist fight … but Mike apologised and they started chatting .. when the other guy learned what Mike did for living, he asked Mike and his partner to come up with the opening theme music for some shows he was working on … including one about an investigator who lived near the beach … and the rest is TV history.

Today Mike Post is widely known for his famous TV shows themes like Law & Order, Hill Street Blues, The A-Team, Magnum PI and a host of others … but if Mike hadn’t almost gotten into a fight at the beach that day … you wouldn’t know any of those songs or one of Mike’s very first TV show themes … the one that was wildly popular and a Top 10 pop hit for Mike in 1975 earning him a Grammy … The Theme from Rockford Files
