Sam and Anna were young and in love … World War 2 has just ended and like so many other returning soldiers Sam was discharged and looking to bright future … their first step was moving from Los Angeles to Portland Oregon … so Sam and Anna packed their car to the brim with everything they could haul … and set off a bit frustrated though that they had to leave other stuff behind because they just didn’t have enough room … well on the way there they got to thinking . maybe other families were having the same problem. … so they came up with a solution on the drive … when they got to Oregon they bought some existing trailers from welding shops and then convinced some local gas stations to rent them out … the units proved popular but broke down .. a lot .. so much so Sam and Anna were almost broke and had to move in with Anna’s parents … but based on what appeared to be their initial success Sam was able to score a loan that allowed them to buy the steel they needed to make their own trailers .. so that’s what they did.

Today, over 70 years later, the business Sam and Anna Shoen started in Oregon and almost bankrupted them til they started making their own trailers now operates out of more than 20,000 locations nationwide and has sales of over $3 billion per year. And you just can’t miss their trailers anywhere. U-Haul.
