Lucy did …
Lucy was an enterprising Hollywood studio executive. Her company produced shows like Mission Impossible and Hogan’s Heroes but was now having serious cash flow problems.
Nevertheless, one day Lucy approved the funding for an expensive new television series pilot that she really liked. Then her team pitched the series to NBC. Unfortunately, the network hated it calling the show too cerebral … so that was that as far as the board of Lucy’s company was concerned. The series and idea were dead. However, Lucy then did something very, very few movie executives had ever done before … she approved a second expensive pilot of the same idea over the objections of her own board. Even with the company’s money being tight … well this time NBC said yes. Of course, negotiations with networks are a little easier when Lucy is Lucille Ball … one of the 20th Century’s most successful Hollywood stars and movie executives.
Today, over 50 years later, the television show that Lucy critically pushed forward when few believed in it is now one of the most successful and beloved “franchises” in entertainment history spanning 8 different television series and 13 feature films. Star Trek
