Jack and Don did …

Jack was a bit of a risk-taker. Though he struggled through high school and college, he eventually became a carrier-based US Navy fighter pilot.

After serving, Jack came home and settled into selling Cadillacs at a local car dealership. It was fun and profitable … then one day he realised there might be a future in long term leasing Cadillacs instead of selling them … so he took a significant pay cut to start a company to do just that.

After several years of success, Jack started thinking about short term car rentals. It looked challenging … but figuring the best way to know for sure was to test it, he gave Don, one of his people, 17 cars to see what he could do. Well, realising Jack’s 17 cars were no match for Hertz or Avis … Don focused away from airports on other markets where people needed cars unexpectedly and for a short duration …. insurance adjusters, garages and auto body shops.

Today, Jack’s car rental holding company is the biggest one in the world .. bigger than Hertz or Avis … with a fleet of over 1.2 million cars. And it is still named after the aircraft carrier where Navy Pilot Jack learned about risk and reward … the USS Enterprise.
