Richard and Betty did.
Richard was not a clumsy guy. He couldn’t afford to be since he was a naval mechanical engineer working on stabilizing sensitive instruments on warships during World War 2.
However, one day one Spring, in his office, he knocked some of the material he was using off a shelf … it fell to the floor and righted itself … which is when he had a great idea … maybe the material would make a great toy … well his wife Betty was initially dubious but when they had some neighbourhood kids test it and love it she was all in … and even came up with the name for the toy.
They worked on it for a year then borrowed $500 and had a local shop build 400 of the unique toys … but no toy shop would take it … finally they convinced the local Gimbels department store to let them demonstrate it … in just 90 minutes they sold out all 400 units … and the orders started piling in …. Within just 2 years Richard & Betty had sold an incredible 100 million units
Today, over 70 years later, Richard & Betty’s toy is in the Toy Hall of Fame, has been featured on a postage stamp and in the Toy Story movies plus flown on the Space Shuttle … and still fascinates virtually anyone who sees one …
