Dan and Frank did.
Dan and Frank grew up in Wichita, Kansas and took business classes at the local university. For a while though, Dan had to interrupt his education for a stint in the airforce. By the time he got back to school, Dan really wanted to write his thesis on franchising after becoming intrigued with the success of McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken … and seeing the rising popularity of a new type of food .. however, his professor wouldn’t allow it … so Dan left school short of completing his master’s degree so he and Frank could start their own business.
They borrowed $600 from their mother and found a quaint little 600 square foot building right near the university in Wichita that was really not much different than the huts that Dan lived in while in the Airforce. And they opened the doors … selling a fast food they knew little about in the beginning … but they learned quickly … and the business was a hit. Before long, putting their education to work, they franchised their first location … and then another …
Today, 60 years later, the company Dan and Frank started has over 15,000 locations worldwide and it’s still named after what they offer and what that first building in Wichita looked like … Pizza Hut
