Johnny did.
Johnny was a DJ in Miami … happily spinning records at local clubs while also working a radio station. One night after the umpteenth request for a year old, Spanish-language, internationally popular dance song about a girl cheating on her boyfriend .. Johnny thought maybe his station should play it … however the station had a policy of no Spanish-language only songs … but his supervisors suggested maybe Johnny rework it … so he got two of his dj friends … they wrote new English lyrics, remixed it and added a dance beat. Well the new version took off immediately … it ended up spending 14 weeks at number 1 in the US in 1996 … and sold over 11 million copies …
It was so popular that at Democratic National Convention that summer, Presidential Candidate Al Gore even made a joke about it in his speech!
Today, the song Johnny and his dj friends remixed to make it playable on his station is now recognized by VH1 as the #1 “one hit wonder” of all time … and is also ranked at #1 on VH1’s Awesomely Bad Song list too … and you won’t be able to get it out of your head when I remind you to … do the Macarena
