Kirk did …
Kirk owned and operated a successful woodworking shop. However, when the Depression hit, he had fewer customers … so he started making more practical furniture and miniature wooden versions of products like step ladders and ironing boards to use as design aids.
That’s when Kirk had a thought .. if I’m making these small wooden products I might as well make toys …. So that’s what he did … piggy banks, trucks and pull toys.
Now Kirk was not afraid to try things … besides making wooden toys they started making plastic ones too. But they didn’t sell very well … and kept getting returned.
Then Kirk’s son hit upon the idea of creating a system of toys … a series of related toys that worked together. So that’s what they did. When disaster struck and the woodworking factory burned down .. the decision was made to go all plastic.
Today, the iconic toy company Kirk started sells billions of dollar worth of toys annually worldwide and is still named for the contraction of the Danish phrase to “play well” … Lego.
