Gus did …
Gus was a chef who was looking to shake up his life when he immigrated to Canada … he loved food but his first job in Calgary was pulling nails on a construction site. Eventually he became a cook at an Arctic work camp and then made his way back to Calgary to dive in to a job as the pastry chef at the Palliser downtown.
One day he was driving along when he saw an ice cream parlour for sale. The owner wanted a lot for it … a lot more than Gus had. But Gus was determined and driven … so he made a deal with a dairy supplier and an accountant to finance what he didn’t have himself.
Now that Gus had his own restaurant he was determined to run things his way. His competitors had small portions, he had big ones. They cut corners, he used quality ingredients. They paid minimum wage, he paid more.
Pretty soon Gus outgrew the former ice cream parlour and had to open a new, larger location across the street to accommodate all the traffic looking for burgers and shakes.
Today, Gus Pieter’s restaurant remains a Calgary institution beloved by many … Peter’s Drive-In.
