Robert did.
Robert had had some success managing bands and producing music oriented movies like Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar … it was fun work … but, as he was feverishly trying to finish his latest movie he couldn’t dance around a big problem … the songs by Stevie Wonder and Boz Scaggs were good … but just not great … so Robert had idea. He called up a band that he’d helped get started years earlier but who was going through a rough patch at the time as they hadn’t had any success for three long years.
But the band was deep in the middle of recording a new album at a Chateau in France … and had literally no time to help … but they realized they owed Robert … so they whipped up several songs quickly over a weekend … without knowing virtually anything about the film except for a quick look at the script and Robert’s constant urging for sizzle and passion.
When the band showed Robert what they’d come up with … he was floored … and used all the songs they’d recorded. And then Robert Stigwood opened his movie … it was a monster … made for just $3.5 million it grossed over $250 million at the box office … and the soundtrack featuring the band’s songs written over that one weekend without them actually seeing the film … won Album of Year and sold 40 million copies .. becoming one of the most successful albums of all time … the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
The Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack is a great idea .. because sometimes the secret to Stayin Alive is not to be afraid to take chances and do what’s right!
