Debra did.
Debra grew up poor. Her dad was a welder in the Navy … and always had a cookie of wisdom or two to share with his kids … and the one that stuck most with Debra was that true wealth was in doing what you loved.
Well, after growing up and spending two years in junior college, Debra got married and became a very happy housewife. Her husband was trying to start an investment firm and life was good. Then one night Debra and her husband were invited to a dinner party at the big beautiful home of one of her husband’s wealthy clients … dinner was going well until the host asked Debra what she did. Well feeling kind of intimidated Debra said, “I’m just trying to get orientated”. The man got up from the table, opened a big leather bound dictionary and pointed out that the word she should have used was oriented .. and then proceeded to say, “if you can’t speak the English language, you shouldn’t speak at all”. Debra was devastated as probably anyone would be and she could have crumbled right there and then … but instead she started questioning what she wanted to do. And remembering what her dad told her about true wealth … she opened a little store to sell one specific type of baked good.
Today, there are over 300 stores “orientated” all across the US … and Debra’s name is on every single one of them … Mrs. Field’s Cookies.
