Charles did …

As a boy, Charles had loved helping his father run a bicycle repair shop. But now, after returning from service in World War 2, Charles was toying with a few new ideas.

“With everyone coming home to get married, start a family and buy a house … they’ll need cribs, strollers, high chairs and other baby stuff, Charles thought. So he opened Children’s Bargain Town in the former bicycle repair shop.

Things were going great for Charles … when one day a female customer wondered if he had any toys she could buy along with a crib. Charles, who believed in listening to his customers needs and fulfilling them, added a few toys to his baby store … and then he got to thinking …. people who bought cribs and strollers usually never came back to the store but People who bought toys came back often. Charles switched focus.

Renting the empty supermarket next door he stocked it with lots of toys, which he offered at discount prices. Then he opened a second store and then another.

Today, the chain Charles started in a bicycle repair shop has over 1,400 supermarket size stores full of toys worldwide … Toys R Us.
