Mom Knows Best

Mark’s Mom did.

Mark was the kind of guy who when he had an idea took some action … so when he came up with an idea for a new business … he naturally took it one of his friends … who promptly told him he’d lost his marbles … but Mark persisted and between Mark, his friend and a few partners they fleshed out a plan for the new business they initially called ABC Air … which kind of sounds like an air conditioning company that wants to be first in the phone book … now usually a bland name like ABC is simple placeholder for a name to be created later … in this case Mark and his partners were using the name ABC as it stood for the geographic area that the business was going to service …A for Alberta and BC for British Columbia.

But nobody really liked it … so they tested some other names like Flying Eagle, Trekker and Altiuss … before Mark’s mom piped up with a different one … a name that just stuck … and the business took off.

Today, over 20 years later, the company Mark and his partner’s originally called ABC Air has annual revenues of $4 billion, over 10,000 employees and does business all over North America … and under the name Mark’s mom suggested … a name designed to honour the company’s western heritage … Westjet
