Bill did …

Bill was living his dream. He was 19, drafted by an NHL club and all set to

So, to help his mother, Bill gave up his hockey playing dreams and took over running the store. It was hard work and a learning experience every day. One night, on a rare day off, Bill was on a date at the crowded local drive-in movie theatre when inspiration hit. If there were this many people at the drive-in at midnight why not at his furniture store?

Well his date and partners laughed the idea off … but Bill’s first midnight sale at his store was a huge success … he sold more in that one night then in the entire previous year.

Naturally Bill wanted to expand the concept but his partners were resistant. So he sold his shares to them and opened his own furniture store in a large brick building at the north end of town … and then just kept on promoting.

Today, over 50 years later, Bill’s furniture store chain now has 220 locations across Canada … and it is still named after the large building he moved into … the Brick.

The Brick is a great idea because differentiating yourself from the competition can help you build a great business.
