Jack did.
Jack faced an incredibly interesting problem that most parents probably never will. You see every day his daughter would
Well you can imagine the reaction … so Jack started thinking of toys he could make that might be better suited.
And that’s when he had an idea … now Jack and his partner ran a die casting business making products for cars including door handles and dashboards. So he used some shop tools and materials and made a very small model of a steamroller that fit nicely inside the matchbox. Well it was a hit with his daughter and with her school friends … so much so that Jack and his partner rented out an old pub and started making more mini-vehicles … and everyone of them fit inside a matchbox.
A few years later, to celebrate the Queen’s coronation Jack made a small royal coach … and sold a million of them in England alone.
Today, the business inspired by Jack’s daughter and her love for taking spiders to school is no more … but for over 40 years they produced and sold a staggering 3 billion of the mini vehicles … and the brand name still inspires fond memories for kids worldwide … and what else would you call them? Matchbox Toys.
Matchbox Toys was a great idea … because sometimes you need to think small to think big.
