Robert did.
Robert was a former Johnson & Johnson salesman who’d founded his own company to market all kinds of bath products. But whenever he came up with successful new product the big conglomerates like Proctor & Gamble and his former company would simply create similar ones and then outmarket, outproduce and outmuscle him.
Then one day Robert had had an epiphany for yet another innovative new product … one that would come in a unique bottle. He was so invested he essentially bet the company on it … and sales took off … so of course the conglomerates noticed and started again to try to come up with their own versions. And that’s when Robert had his second great idea … if he couldn’t stop them maybe he could outsmart them and give himself some extra time to build a defendable market. So that’s what he did. He called up the only two manufacturers of a key part of the unique bottle and pre-ordered 100 million units effectively stopping the conglomerates from producing any competitive products for a whole year even if they wanted to … now he had unfettered access to a crazy big new market.
Today, almost 40 years later, the product Robert Taylor first created, mass-produced and popularized is now in virtually every home. The liquid soap dispenser.
The liquid soap dispenser is a great idea … because sometimes the best way to beat the competition is simply to outsmart and avoid them!
