Lewis was born in Pontypool, Ontario and was energized when it came to science … ending up with a chemical engineering degree from the University of Toronto … after graduation he got a job at a manufacturing company in Ohio. His job was to see if he could make the company product’s made last longer as sales were suffering because they didn’t … … the company’s existing product used zinc and carbon ..but Lewis felt it might be better to create a whole new product … so he and some researchers tried a mixture of manganese dioxide, zinc, and an electrolyte instead … others had tried this approach before with little success … but Lewis’s idea was to use powdered zinc … it worked great … the only problem was his bosses weren’t convinced … so Lewis set up a demonstration in the company cafeteria .. he outfitted two toy cars .. one had the old product and the other had the new prototype … well when the first toy car stopped working … the other one with prototype just kept going and going.

Today, 60 years later Lewis Urry’s first prototype product is in the Smithonsian and the latest versions of what Lewis originally created help generate almost $2 billion in annual sales worldwide … the Energizer Alkaline Battery
