David did.
David was desperate … a major in the South Vietnamase Army, he had to flee the country immediately as the war there was ending badly .. and the only way out for him and his family was on a freighter, a freighter carrying 3000 other refugees too … well David ended up in Los Angeles where he faced two new problems... #1 he couldn’t find a job and #2 he couldn’t find a hot sauce that replicated what he liked back in Vietnam. And that’s when David had a great idea … he’d make his own sauce and market it himself to other Vietnamese immigrants. He started off small making batches of by hand, packaging it in reused baby bottles and and driving the product around to customers himself. Well people started buying David’s sauce … a lot of it … and not just Vietnamese immigrants but virtually anyone who appreciated a hot sauce … and this despite David choosing to do no advertisingat all to this very day, instead David totally relied on word of mouth … and that was that.
Today, forty years later David Trans’ hot sauce is the number one brand across North America .. selling over 20 million bottles a year despite not advertising at all. David named his food company after that Taiwanese freighter that helped him and family leave Vietnam... Huy Fong ... and he named his sauce after a place in Thailand, Sri acha
