Margo did.
Margo grew up in 1960s in Baltimore and ended up as a theatrcial producer in New York City … One day she was at home nursing a cold … when she saw a 1980s cult movie on TV … and realised it might make a great Broadway show … so she called up the movie company and licenced the rights for next to nothing because they really didn’t expect it to go anywhere… then she got the writer to sign off on it .. and that was easy because they were from the same town … then she hired some creative types to create the songs and the book .. then she started to raise money .. which was hard to do in New York City immediately after 9/11 .. but she and other producers raised $10.5 million mostly from 300 everyday investors who put in as little as $10,000 each. They tested the show in Seattle … and it was a disaster … the first week only 30% of the seats were filled … but word quickly spread and pretty soon every show was sold out.
Then they opened on Broadway .. where productions can easily lose a lot of money … but Margo’s investors were all paid back in full in just 10 months and the show just kept playing and making fat profits from there.
Today, 20 years after watching a cult movie on TV, the musical Margo Lion helped create has won 8 Tony Awards, earned $200 million at the film box office and made its 300 mostly everyday investors very, very happy and very, very rich … and you call it .. Hairspray
