Juell was 13 when he first went to sea working on a fishing boat … 20 years later he was a seasoned sea captain with his own ship. Working in Norway, fishing was especially hard due to the harsh and unforgiving weather. And Juell was frustrated that he and his sailors were always cold and wet. And That’s when he had a hell of a good idea … creating waterproof clothing that kept sailors warm. The challenge was how? So Juell and his wife tried a whole bunch of different approaches until they found a winner. Linseed oil applied to cotton. Their new “oilskin apparel” worked like a charm … sailors from everywhere started to buy Juell’s clothes … which he named after himself … the clothes were such a hit they soon won a prestigious award at the World Expo in Paris .. which got other people who operated in cold and wet conditions to buy Juell’s clothes too.

Today, 140 year later, Juells company is recognized worldwide as a premium outdoor apparel company and not just for sailors … they are in workwear and their performance ski apparel is worn by Olympians, National Teams, and staff at more than 200 ski resorts and mountain guiding operations around the world.
