With the new war now on, the Navy had a problem, it couldn’t produce radar units fast enough … Radar relies on a device called a magnetron … and the company Percy worked for could only produce jst 17 per day … well Percy figured out a better way … and soon they were producing 2,600 per day … which certainly was a great idea … but not the one Percy is remembered for … One day while walking in front of an active radar unit Percy noticed the chocolate bar in his pocket had melted … and he was so curious as to why .. he came up with a new commercial device he called the Radarrange … it was big … 6 feet tall, 750 pounds and cost the equivalent of $65,000 … and more importantly it worked. And then it took Percy jn 20 more years to make it small enough to sell to everyday people.

Today, the device Percy Spencer came up with all because he noticed a chocolate bar melted in his pocket is now small enough and inexpensive enough that you’ll find one in virtually everyone’s kitchen … The Microwave Oven
