Gus did …

Gus was a Greek Sailor who didn’t really want to go back to Greece. Canada looked a lot more appealing. So, while his ship was in Vancouver, he snuck off with nothing more than clothes on his back and a few dollars in his jeans.

Over the next six years, Gus worked hard at various jobs sometimes only getting a few hours sleep every night. Having settled in Edmonton he had saved up enough money to open a Pizza and Spaghetti restaurant … but he needed a name that was different … different yet easily memorable.

After some thought Gus decided a Canadian company owned by Greeks that served Italian food, should have an American name.

So that’s what he did … he named it after a city that had both baseball and hockey teams … and built it quickly to over 42 locations in part because people thought it was an American chain.

Gus eventually sold the company but today, the restaurant chain he started in Edmonton has over 350 locations across Canada and almost $1 billion in sales … is still named for the home of the Bruins and Red Sox …. Boston Pizza.
