Rebecca did.
Rebecca loved to write songs. She started at the age of 7 and pretty will just kept doing it everyday. After a while she started singing them too and had some minor hits.
Eventually she found a mentor in a country entertainer who for seven years made sure she figured prominently in his television show. She had fun … but eventually knew she had to go her own way … and Rebecca being Rebecca … she got it off her chest by writing a song about it … a song about the professional break-up of their successful working relationship … and wouldn’t you know it … it went to number 1 on the country charts.
Which is when Elvis came calling wanting to record the song himself … Rebecca was absolutely thrilled … until Elvis’ agent Col Tom Parker told her that it was standard policy for songwriters to hand over half the publishing rights to Elvis. Well sir few people turned down Elvis … but Rebecca said no way and the rest is history.
Eventually, Whitney Houston recorded Rebecca’s professional breakup song and took …“I Will Always Love You” to number 1 on the popular music charts for a record 14 consecutive weeks …
Today, that one song has earned millions in royalties for Rebecca … millions that she didn’t have to share with Elvis thanks to a savvy business decision she made … but that’s not much of a surprise if you know Rebecca … who goes by her first name … Dolly … as in Dolly Parton
