Richard did.
Richard grew up in Montreal and opened a bbq chicken restaurant there that did pretty well. So well in fact that he moved to Toronto and opened one there too. Pretty soon there were a handful of them in town … then Richard starting looking around to create a second, different type of restaurant format … one that would use open flames to cook his food just like his chicken restaurants … and he found one … a burger joint. And he knew what to call it too … Humprehey’s. Humprehey’s was a smash right from the start and grew quickly across the country. Don’t know Humprehey’s? Well there’s a reason. Shortly before opening his first location … Richard was flipping through the newspaper … and saw that a car dealer was going out of business and that their very large store sign was up for sale … and he actually liked their name better … so he bought the sign and changed the name of the burger joint just before he opened.
Today, 60 years later, the hamburger chain Richard initially called Humprehey’s has 280 locations across Canada … under the new name Richard took on when we bought that very large sign from a bankrupt car dealership called John Harvey Motors … Harvey’s
