Victor did.

Victor was a singer and dancer who made it to New York and ended up appearing in the original Broadway production of the Wiz and recorded two albums of his own music with minor success.

One day he was introduced to a French record producer in the Village who liked Victor’s voice. Pretty soon Victor agreed to provide lead vocals for the producer’s non-existent concept group. After two minor disco hits a small problem arose … American Bandstand wanted the group to perform live on TV … so Victor and the producer needed to quickly assemble a real group of People who could sing behind Victor. They put an ad in a music trade paper looking for macho singers who could dance and just as important had a moustache. And things took off from there with Victor as lead singer policing the group and also a writer of several of the group’s hits.

One day while in the studio recording songs for their upcoming album, they needed another song. They had the music but needed the lyrics … They wanted something fun and upbeat when Victor had an idea … thinking back to his time in Vancouver, BC and a place he stayed for fun when he was down on his luck.

Well the song was a massive hit and his group, the Village People, became famous worldwide.

Today, the song Victor wrote in Vancouver you still hear often today and is one of the most successful and best selling songs of all time … and you know the words … and the dance. YMCA
