Dogged Determination

Grant did.

Grant was 23 and a real character. One day, carrying his worklife home in a garbage bag he suddenly had a great idea …. And he knew just what to do with it.

Grant went and pitched it to a Calgary entertainment company. In the manager’s office Grant talked up his idea passionately … when he finished the manager said nothing, but got up, left the room and came back with a thick pile of files which he dropped on the desk in front of Grant.

We get many pitches like this, said the manager … why would we ever considering work with you?

Grant was dumbstruck … but like a dog with bone … he was not going to give up easily and offered something no one else had … “I’ll do it risk-free said Grant … if I don’t do a great job you don’t pay me … plus I’ll even pay for my own uniform”. Well it was the manager’s turn to be dumbstruck but then he quickly said yes.

For the next 11 years, Grant had a crazy successful business owning and performing the hugely popular character before the entertainment company realised how successful it was and knew they better buy the rights before Grant sold it to someone else.

Today, 30 years after his first performance at a Calgary Flames game, the character Grant created still entertains millions of hockey fans every year … and Grant is still hounded about it all the time …. Harvey the Hound.
