You could write a lot about Marcel … how he Marcel was a bic rough around the edges, how got into many close shaves or how he lit up many a room. But the real story is something else.

It was near the end of World War 2 … and Marcel made specific instruments as a director of projects for an English manufacturing company. They were precise and expensive … and you didn’t dare lose one.

One day Marcel heard about a really innovative version of the instrument … one that Royal Air Force had just bought 30,000 of for all their pilots who needed an instrument that worked at all angles and all directions …. But each instrument was extremely expensive costing the equivalent of $500 today.

Well Marcel was intrigued .. After he saved up enough money, he bought the rights to the expensive instrument … and opened a manufacturing plant in Paris … but instead of selling only a few of them for a lot of money he chose instead to mass produce millions and sell them for just pennies … before long everyone in France was using one of Marcel’s instruments … then Marcel went to virtually every other country and did the same thing. He had such success with the instruments he did the same thing with simple razors and lighters.

Today, over 60 years later, Marcel Bic’s company has sold over 100 billion of the clever instruments. You probably have a handful near you right now .. and you’ve probably lost more of them than you care to count.
