Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield did

Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield met in high school and became fast friends.

After college they decided to go into the food business … which was surprising for two reasons … first because Mr. Cohen had a condition where he could not taste much … so the food they made had to be chunky for texture. And second because they knew nothing about the food they wanted to make … so they spent $5 and took a correspondence course from the U of Pennsylvania.

Then they pooled their life savings and opened in a former gas station in a university town ... Well there store was a big hit … with lines ups round the block … that is until winter set in and things were so cold outside that no one came.

The friends closed the store … and retooled focusing on packaging their food instead and selling it through other stores. Well this time it took. They were so successful that within a few years they were named Small Business People of the Year by the President.

Today the Company Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield started in a gas station in Vermont … still turns out its tasty treats that you can buy most anywhere … and it is still named after them … Benjamin Cohen and Gerald Greenfield … Ben & Jerry’s
