Charles did.
Charles was studying to be a lawyer when he had his first great idea … and that was he didn’t want to be a lawyer. So, he dropped out unsure of what to do next. After taking acting classes to help him get over his fear of public speaking, Charles realized acting was where he’d make some coin … plus he was good at it … especially accents and dialects. Well Charles got work in theatre, corporate videos, films and tv shows but after several long years he still hadn’t gotten a big break. That was until a friend told him about an acting audition at a video game trade show … the actor was to provide the voice for the real-time screen animated character that was to interact with the trade show attendees. Now Charles had never crashed an audition before but decided to go out on a limb and give it ago. The producer was tearing down the set when Charles showed up and asked to audition. Charles thought of doing the voice as a tough guy with a thick accent but then realized he might be talking to kids so livened it up instead to be more friendly and energetic. The producer was wowed and immediately called up the video game executive and told them that they had found the voice for the character at the trade show and for the forthcoming video game.
Today, the iconic character Charles Martinet has voiced for over 20 years after crashing that audition is the star of one of the premier multibillion video game franchises of all time … Super Mario.
