William did.
William was 47 … and about to publish his first novel.
He had grown up outside Edmonton and loved to write … but didn’t attend an actual school until Grade 5. William loved literature, worked in the school library and attended every play or production that he could.
After high school and stints working for the provincial government and even managing a credit bureau William finally went to university in his mid-30s to follow his dream of becoming a professional writer.
After obtaining degrees in his Field from U of Victoria and U of Iowa, William started by publishing short stories, which were a minor hit.
Now at 47, he had written his first novel … and hoped Hollywood would come … calling. And they did … turning a corny story about America’s favourite pastime written by a Canadian born outside Edmonton into a home run movie.
Today, the movie based on William Patrick Kinsella’s novel Shoeless Joe is timeless classic. Field of Dreams.
Field of Dreams is a great idea … because sometimes what seems irrational to others might just turn out to be something special … or to put it another way … sometimes “if you build it … they will come”
