John did …

John was 43 and an entrepreneur … he published trade magazines … that is magazines specific to one industry or another.

One day John, aiming to inspire readers as much as entertain them, purchased the monthly, in-house publication of an advertising agency called the Business Magazine. With 5,000 subscribers the magazine tag line was “the Cream of the World’s magazines reproduced for Busy People.”

The magazine had mostly American and British articles. Readers liked it but kept telling John they wanted more Canadian articles that reflected the Canadian point of view.

So carefully adjusting the format he started emphasizing Canadian articles as well as publishing more frequently. He also strove to use good writers across the country to tell different stories.

Realizing the name The Business Magazine was a bit too narrow and the subsequent name change to the Busy Man’s Magazine didn’t work either John opted to simply name it after himself.

Today the magazine John Maclean built is Canada’s only national weekly current affairs magazine with 2.4 million readers. Maclean’s
