Burt and Irv did.

Burt’s family owned a men’s clothing shop in Chicago … his dad was soon to retire and it was all his … except he wasn’t that excited about it … his sister didn’t want the business either … she was married to Irv, and they had moved to Glendale, California where Irv ran an ice cream store called Snowbirds. One day Burt was out visiting his sister and brother-in law in California … and they got to talking business … at the end of day Irv said selling ice cream was a lot more fun than selling neck ties .. so Burt packed up and moved to nearby Pasadena. … where he opened his own ice cream store that he called Burton’s. Well things went well for both brothers in law … Burt opened 3 stores and Irv had 5 … and then one day they had a great idea .. they both loved the ice cream business … why not combine their stores into one company .. and that’s what they did … but what to call it … not Snowbrid and not Burtons … they eventually decided on using their last names … and it came down to a coin toss to see whose name would go first on the signage. Well the rest is history

Today, nearly 70 years later, the ice cream store chain and brand that the brothers-in-law started has almost 8,000 locations in 50 coutnries and is still named after them … Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins .. Baskin Robbins
