Omar did.
Omar Knedlik owned a Dairy Queen in Kansas City back in the 1950s. The problem with his Dairy Queen was that the machinery was always breaking down. It became so troubling that Omar had to put items in the freezer to keep them cool. When customers came into his Dairy queen to order those items, he sold them even though they were more frozen than before. Customer feedback was positive and they would end up coming back to his restaurant just to get those frozen items. With this in mind, Omar created a machine that could create these more frozen products. He held a contest to come up with the name and the winning entry was ICEE. He got the machine redesigned and then sold them to few different convenience stores. Omar’s big break came when 7-Eleven started licensing the machine. Since then, his machine has taken off.
Today, Omar’s machine can be seen in most convenience stores across the world. Overall, North Americans slurp almost 13 million of these items every month. Although it was originally called ICEE, 7-11 called it something else ... Slurpees
