Breaking Dishes

Josephine did.

Josephine and her husband lived in a mansion in Shelbyville Illinois. And they loved to entertain throwing party after party … one day after a servant accidently broke an expensive dish Josephine decided to start cleaning up after parties herself. Well once she realized how much work it was she thought there must be a better way … and came up with her great idea … but she had no idea how to build it … so she went the library to figure it out. A little later while Josephine was working on her plans for the contraption tragedy struck … her husband unexpectedly died … leaving Josephine with huge debts, no money and no choice but to develop her idea in order to simply survive. So together with a mechanic friend they figured out the details, got a patent and started making units in an abandoned school house … her first customer wasn’t a housewife like she thought it would be … it was a hotel in Chicago who gave her a great recommendation .. then other hotels started buying units and then restaurants, colleges and hospitals … and then eventually in every home!

Today, over 130 years later the device that Josephine Cochrane came up because of a broken dish at a party and that she then built and sold to simply survive is everywhere in virtually every home, business and school … the dishwasher

The dishwasher is a great idea because sometimes having no choice but to develop an idea will let you clean up big!
