When Tobias was 6 he got a commodore 64 for Christmas … by 11 he was rewriting games code and before long became a professional computer programmer.

Fast forward a few years and now living in Ottawa Tobias was shopping around for something new to do when he and some friends decided to open an online snowboard shop.

While securing the products was easy … getting the ecommerce part of the website was hard and was not going well … and without being able to sell online it didn’t much matter what else they did … so Tobias did what Tobias loves to do … he decided to program his own ecommerce solution … it took a while … but he kept costs down by not taking a salary, living with his parents-in-law and selling a few snowboards.

When others asked to use his solution Tobias and his partners realized that maybe the future lay not in snowboards but in selling an ecommerce solution.

With some seed capital from a Toronto angel investor who liked having an excuse to visit his own parents in Ottawa .. they set up Shop and started to grow.

Today, in just 9 years, Tobias and partners have gone public after helping over 165,000 businesses sell online in over 150 countries … and with a market valuation of over $2 billion they are still based in Ottawa. Shopify
