Ed did …
Ed was a lawyer with a bit of an entrepreneurial streak. While representing some barley growers in a legal action he learned two things that totally surprised him. First, that the barley grown in Alberta was ideally suited for malting … and Second, that most of this production wasn’t used for malting at all but instead fed to cattle.
What a waste thought Ed. He liked good beer and he had tried making his own in the past. Now, at 60, Ed decided to do something about it … and to do something Big and different. He decided to open a craft brewery that leveraged Alberta’s barley and plentiful hard mountain water to create great quality ales.
Well things got off to a Rocky start but Ed kept plugging along. Then one summer, just one year after being in production, the two major domestic breweries went on strike. Ed’s beer was the only beer available in Alberta all that summer. Working around the clock to satisfy demand Ed’s brewery and beer were now firmly established.
Today, Ed’s brewery remains based in Calgary and is Canada’s biggest producer of premium, all-natural craft beers … Big Rock Brewery.
