Jim did.
Jim grew up in Montreal .. he loved the ocean and ended up in the Navy. Jim was big and he was tough. Over 23 years he rose to level of commander. And one day while hanging out on a beach he ran into a classic logistical problem that was bedevilling everyone.
A pier extended off the beach for almost half a mile … but it was only 10 feet wide … that wasn’t the problem … the problem was the pier was only processing 50 units an hour on to ships … and they had a backlog of 200,000 units they had to get out right away.
So, Jim took charge and reorganized the entire effort … in tough conditions … in just a few hours … processing soared 40 times to 2,000 units an hour … and in just 5 days Jim is credited with getting those 200,000 units off that beach through that pier. The rest is history.
Today, over 70 years later, you might not know Canadian Navy Commander James Campbell Clouston by name, but you probably have heard of the beach where he ran the pier for just five days during World War II and help save the lives of those 200,000 units … the 200,000 men trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk.
