You could say that Garrett had a lot of drive. Standing on a street corner in San Francisco on the way to a date … it was raining and his cab was 30 minutes late …. Not the typical time you suddenly have a super great idea. But that he did …

Garrett had grown up in Calgary.. he loved computers and he loved James Bond .. after graduating from University with a masters in software engineering he had his friends started a company that showcased websites to others … within a short time they had 50,000 users with no marketing and no investment … they wanted to go big … but investors in Calgary weren’t interested … they didn’t see the potential … but after an invitation to Silicon Valley Garrett and his friends hit the motherlode … and eventually they sold their company StumbleUpon to eBay for $75 million.

Now Garrett was a millionaire, running StumbleUpon for the new owners … and standing on the street in the rain in the San Francisco …. And he wondered why James Bond could hit a button and solve his problem but he couldn’t.

So Garrett invested $200,000 of his own money to seed his idea … and they started with three vehicles in New York City … and then a few more in San Francisco.

Today, the company that Garrett Camp started with $200,000 in 2009 operates in almost 500 cities across 66 countries … has a market value of over $50 billion … and has made Garrett a billionaire … Uber
